Waititu released on Sh15 million bail, barred from accessing office
Kiambu Governor Waititu has been freed on a Sh15 million bail after denying Sh588 million graft case.
His wife Susan Wangari was also freed on Sh4 million bail by Anti-Corruption Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi.
The Judge ruled that Waititu will however not be allowed to access his office until the case is determined.
Waititu denied charges ranging from engaging in a fraud, conflict of interest, dealing with suspect property, money laundering and abuse of office.
He was represented by lawyer Prof. Tom Ojienda who argued that there was no evidence that tax-payers’ money was lost, saying the issue was largely on how the tender was awarded.
Waititu, his wife and others charged spent the night in police cells after they denied the charges.
He turned himself in on Sunday together with his Chief Officer for roads Luka Mwangi Waihenya.
It is expected that his deputy Dr James Nyoro will take charge of day-to-day running of the county.
