VC battle at UoN goes bare-knuckle as Kiama, Mbeche stay put

University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor Professor Stephen Kiama has stated that he is going to operate from a temporary office in Gandhi Wing after the he was allegedly locked out of the Vice Chancellor’s chamber.

The Professor on Wednesday rubbished claims that he is away on leave according to Prof Isaac Mbeche.

“As an interim measure, and to respect and safeguard university property from wanton destruction, the Vice-Chancellor will operate from the old Vice Chancellor’s Office in Gandhi Wing as a solution.” Part of a memo he issued read.

Mbeche said that Prof Kiama has no right to claim that he was on leave as he had called back by the Ministry of Education.

This comes two days after the Employment and Labour Court suspended an order issued by Education CS, Prof George Magoha, revoking Prof Kiama’s appointment.

This came after it emerged that Prof Kiama’s promotion, from deputy VC in charge of human resources and administration, was unprocedural.

Prof Magoha, a former VC at the university, immediately reinstated Prof Isaac Mbeche, the deputy VC in charge of finance, planning and development, as the university’s boss is an acting capacity, pending appointment of a substantive VC.

But Prof Mbeche said he will still honour the court order but as he awaits the Ministry of Education’s and AG case at the High Court.

Prof Magoha directed the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate the controversial appointment of Prof Kiama.
