COVID-19: Government bows to pressure, sets to lift lockdown

Top government officials and the National Emergency Response Committee on COVID-19 are in a meeting to drop certain containment measures that were recently announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Top of the agenda is lifting lockdown order that has seen Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, Machakos and Nakuru labelled as Disease Infested Area with no movements into and out of the region.

The meeting is also discussing the possibility of reverting curfew hours to start at 10 pm.

This follows in response to a major protest by Kenyans from the entertainment and Hospitality industry who on Wednesday took to the streets of Nairobi to condemn the government’s order on closure of businesses – a measure taken to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Carrying placards with different messages, the demonstrators aired their grievances as they lamented their predicaments.
