Tanzania heartthrob Vanessa Mdee reveals her struggle with alcoholism and fake life
Tanzanian songstress Vanessa Mdee has opened up on her past life and why she has decided to take a break from music and showbiz.
In a podcast she shared on Thursday, the ‘Wet’ singer revealed that she has been struggling with alcoholism in the last one year and living a fake life to hide her struggles.
Mdee said in 2019 especially, she used to drink herself to bed and asked the people around her to cover for her and protect her image.
“I drank myself to sleep every night. I am not proud of it but it is my truth and I know there are people who need to hear this. I was lying to people around me to cover up and to keep the facade alive,” Mdee said.
She added: “I became a person of horrible choices. I couldn’t recognise myself anymore because I woke up every day trying to just get by and I don’t want to just get by anymore. More than ever, I had moments of anxiety and moments of depression, I had moments of I don’t know what to do next because this pressure is unnatural for a human being. And what comes after that? This may come as a shock to many because I hid it so well but I was depressed and an alcoholic.”
She further revealed that she sank into depression and this was occasioned by her involvement in music and entertainment.
Mdee further vowed not to released any music soon and that she will keep off the entertainment industry as she tries to recover her lost self and be a better person.
“I have no desire to do anything that is music industry-related, I have no desire to go to another award show, to keep up a facade, I have no desire to be a pseudo person which I truly became and I could not recognise myself anymore,” she further said.
Mdee major success in music until when she broke up with long time boyfriend, singer Juma Jux.
She then started dating American actor Rotimi and the two live together. She decided to take a break from music to concentrate on her personal life.
